Job Summary

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials, intermediate products (clinker), and finished cement. The primary goal is to ensure that all products meet internal quality benchmarks and statutory ZABS (Zambia Bureau of Standards) specifications. This role involves high-precision testing, equipment calibration, and strict adherence to Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) protocols.

Key Responsibilities

1. Sampling and Analysis

  • Perform routine sampling and physical/chemical analysis of raw materials (limestone, clay, gypsum, coal).
  • Conduct hourly testing of clinker and finished cement to ensure chemical consistency (LSF, Silica Modulus, Alumina Modulus).
  • Execute physical tests including Blaine fineness, setting time (Vicat), soundness (Le-Chatelier), and compressive strength testing at 2, 7, and 28 days.

2. Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment such as XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) analyzers, XRD spectrometers, and automatic titrators.
  • Perform daily calibration of scales, ovens, and compression machines to ensure data integrity.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment faults and coordinate with the maintenance department for major repairs.

3. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Monitor production parameters and provide immediate feedback to the Central Control Room (CCR) to correct any deviations in quality.
  • Ensure all laboratory processes comply with ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management).
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly quality reports for the Quality Assurance Manager.

4. HSE & Housekeeping

  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment (5S methodology).
  • Strictly adhere to the company’s safety policies, including the correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and handling of laboratory reagents.
  • Manage laboratory waste in accordance with ZEMA (Zambia Environmental Management Agency) regulations.

Technical Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: Full Grade 12 Certificate with Credits or better in English, Mathematics, and Science.
  • Professional Qualification: Diploma or Degree in Laboratory Technology, Chemical Engineering, or Applied Chemistry from a recognized Zambian institution.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in a manufacturing laboratory, preferably within the cement, lime, or mining industry.
  • Knowledge:
  • Proficiency in chemical analysis and wet chemistry.
  • Familiarity with Zambian cement standards.
  • Basic understanding of the cement manufacturing process (Dry process/Pre-heater kilns)
