Zambia Sugar Plc. is an ABF Group sugar company and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.

The company invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the following position under the Manufacturing Department.

FACTORY SERVICES ENGINEER – MAINTENANCE x 1
This position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager. The successful incumbent will be responsible for being the owner of all mechanical iAMP Construction, factory fire reticulation systems, as well as driving and embedding of the “ABF Way of Maintenance (iAMP)” by implementing world class practices to optimize mechanical equipment on site.

Key Performance Areas

  • Together with the team ensure optimal performance of all mechanical equipment in the sugar factory.
  • Responsible for engineering input to the factory team in terms of equipment availability for the season i.e., all vessels and piping, Mechanical structural equipment, all factory fire reticulation systems.
  • Responsible for the mechanical engineering input to the maintenance head in terms of repair solutions and supervision / co-ordination of repairs to critical equipment / Abnormal projects etc.
  • Responsible for Mechanical Engineering input into Capital / Abnormal & Maintenance Projects.
  • Management of allocated Capital Projects.
  • Manage/oversee all mechanical works on allocated Abnormal Projects during Off-Crop.
  • Responsible for the mechanical aspects of the Stop Day and Off-Crop planning processes and execution of the mechanical maintenance scope.
  • Responsible for the development of Season and Off-Crop Mechanical budgets with Factory Mechanical Engineering Manager, Finance Business Partner, Optimization Team, and manage allocated budgets, including cost effective management of resources.
  • Address production losses caused by inefficient engineering applications by critically analyzing and maximizing the systems performance.
  • Collaborate with Reliability Engineer to identify and execute reliability improvements through design modifications and reliability improvement strategies.
  • Responsible for Maintenance improvements to optimize efficiency and output of identified mechanical equipment achieving site mechanical reliability criteria within mechanical maintenance budget.
  • Provide expertise on day-to-day Mechanical Engineering related issues, support and advice on solutions.
  • Provide technical and overall leadership to personnel under area of responsibility.
  • Ensure effective implementation of engaged performance management systems.
  • Responsible for mechanical engineering input for specifications and plant modifications.
  • Drive synergies with the Group, effectively partnering with Group counterparts to identify, share and embed opportunities for engineering improvements.
  • Set direction, implement and monitor continuous improvement by driving work practices, and ensuring that tools and techniques are being applied to deliver high-quality products made in a safe and sustainable manner.
  • Manage and coordinate the sharing and implementation of identified engineering best practices, frameworks and minimum standards within function across entities and through the Head Office platform and provide additional opportunities for problem identification and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintain effective engagement with key maintenance & engineering service providers
  • Responsible for the Management of mechanical technical standards, specifications and group risk mitigation policies and the governance thereof.
  • Responsible for Statutory Requirements and legal appointments as delegated by Maintenance Manager and required by the Country Occupational Health and Safety Act (or equivalent).
  • Identify and monitor KPIs to track performance and flag any issues.
  • Promote and adhere to ABF’s procedures, policies and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements areas

  • Full Grade 12 Certificate
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Preferably 3+ years’ broad experience on sugar mill equipment
  • Preferably 2+ years on Water tube Boilers and Power Generation is a requirement
  • Preferably 2+ years maintenance engineering experience
  • Continuous improvement of knowledge and experience
  • Fully proficient on the maintenance requirements of the OSH Act or Country Equivalent (Statutory maintenance, inspections, legal appointments etc.) as it relates to all sugar milling equipment including but not limited to high pressure steam systems, power generation, rotating equipment and maintenance.
  • Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates which have been verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
