BCP is recruiting Forest Monitoring Team Members x 8 (x 4 Kasempa and x 4 Livingstone) in order to fulfill the critical role of undertaking forest monitoring for REDD+ compliance purposes. The position is required work independently in remote areas under often difficult field conditions. The position is responsible for ensuring all data collection campaigns run smoothly, are within required error parameters, and safely transfer all data.
Responsibilities:
- All monitoring and camping equipment in good order and report any failures/losses to FMT Coordinator immediately
- Complete annual forest inventories – sampling 20% of all inventory plots per year with less than 5% error in sampling of circumference measurements based on the official field manual
- Monitor fire impact transects every year
- Complete two transect-based biodiversity monitoring surveys in partnership with scout teams, one in June and one in October
- Undertake random biodiversity monitoring when directed
- High point survey to determine the ground hornbill population size.
- Transfer all collected data directly after field campaigns to the FMT Coordinator
- Assist with general BCP tasks such as camp maintenance
- General mapping – collect data on roads and other infrastructure
- Digging soil pits and collecting soil bulk density and carbon samples when required.

- Qualification; A minimum of a full Grade 12 Certificate.
- Additional qualifications will be added advantage.
Skills
- Knowledge of Zambian Flora, ability to identify trees in Mopane and Miombo woodlands
- Physically fit and in good health at all times
- Walk long distances carrying heavy field equipment
- Team Player – must be able to work in a team for weeks on end
- Undertake basic and advanced forest inventory measurement activities including diameter measurements and height measurements using clinometers.
- Ability to navigate to remote forest plots using the GPS function on an Android smartphone or standalone GPS
- Data capture on Android smartphones
- Ability to work in remote areas for long periods of time
- Excellent communication skills.
- Act as an ambassador at all times for BCP in project areas.
- Take responsibility for all equipment delegated to FIT member
- Safely and efficiently manage all collected field data.
