OVERVIEW
Responsible for performing surgeries to treat injuries, diseases, and deformities across various parts of the body.
The role includes patient evaluation, surgical planning, performing operations, and post-operative care to ensure patient safety and recovery.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
– Examine patients, review medical histories, and diagnose conditions requiring surgery.
– Recommend and plan appropriate surgical procedures, explaining risks, benefits, and alternatives to patients.
– Perform surgical operations ranging from minor procedures (e.g., mole removal) to major surgeries (e.g., tumor or organ removal) using traditional, minimally invasive, or robotic techniques.
– Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatments and monitor patient recovery.
– Maintain sterility and safety in the operating room, ensuring proper use of surgical instruments and equipment.
– Collaborate with anesthesiologists, nurses, and surgical assistants to provide comprehensive patient care.
– Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, residents, or surgical teams, particularly in senior or consultant roles.
– Stay updated on advancements in surgical techniques, medical equipment, and patient care protocols.
– Undertake administrative tasks such as record-keeping as assigned by the Director of Clinical Care from time to time.
QUALIFICATIONS
– Full grade XII school certificate or equivalent.
– MBChB or equivalent from a recognised university.
– MMed in General Surgery or other postgraduate degree from a recognised university.
– Fully registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia.
– Accreditation and fellowship to a medical body will be an added advantage.
– Strong interpersonal skills.
– Traceable references.
– Valid practising licence.
– Five years of post-qualification working experience as a general surgeon.
