
Chipalo Energy
We are an established electrical services and renewable energy engineering company delivering large-scale solar PV and infrastructure projects across Zambia. We’re mobilising for construction of a 25 MWp utility-scale solar PV plant in Chipalo Village, Luwingu District, and seeking a hands-on, experienced Solar PV Electrical Technician for the site team.
You’ll handle installation, commissioning, testing, and fault-finding across utility-scale solar PV systems — mounting structures, panelling, DC string and combiner-box works, inverter stations, MV cabling, and site electrical protection systems — working closely with Site Engineers, the Project Manager, and subcontractors to deliver a safe, on-schedule, bankable asset.
This is a project-site based role requiring relocation to, or daily travel within, Luwingu District for the construction and commissioning phase.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Installation & Electrical Work
- Install PV modules, mounting structures, combiner boxes, inverters, transformers and associated equipment.
- Carry out DC/AC installation work — cabling, terminations, earthing and surge protection.
- Work from electrical drawings and SLDs, complying with ZS 791, ZS 403–407, ZS 418 and project specs.
Commissioning
- Perform pre-commissioning tests (continuity, insulation resistance, IV-curve) on strings and arrays.
- Commission inverters, combiner boxes, transformers and SCADA equipment.
- Support start-up, energisation and grid interconnection testing.
Quality Assurance
- Identify and rectify defects and punch-list items.
- Inspect workmanship against project and ZS standards.
- Support ITP sign-off and handover documentation.
Site & Project Support
- Carry out routine inspections across the array, inverter stations and substation.
- Coordinate with the Site Supervisor, Construction Manager and subcontractors to keep work on schedule.
- Guide junior technicians as needed; liaise professionally with contractors and suppliers.
Documentation & Reporting
- Keep accurate installation, testing and commissioning records, including faults and corrective actions.
- Contribute to commissioning packs and as-built documentation.
Health & Safety
- Follow site HSE procedures and electrical regulations.
- Wear PPE; report hazards and near-misses to the HSE Officer promptly.
Essential (Non-negotiable)
• Qualified Electrician holding a TEVETA Trade Test Certificate / Craft Certificate (Power Electrical) or an equivalent recognised electrical qualification.
• Minimum 2+ years’ post-qualification experience as a Solar PV Technician, Electrician, or in a similar electrical role, with proven hands-on solar PV installation experience.
• Solid working knowledge of ZS 791: Wiring of Premises – Code of Practice, ZS 403–407, and ZS 418: Electrical Safety Code.
• Demonstrated experience with the installation, commissioning and fault-finding of solar PV systems, including inverters.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics and Single Line Diagrams (SLDs).
• Competent in the use of electrical testing equipment (multimeters, insulation testers, IV-curve tracers).
• Valid Zambian driver’s licence.
• Willingness to relocate to, or travel daily within, Luwingu District for the duration of the project.
• Must be a Zambian national
Advantageous:
• Prior experience on utility-scale (multi-MW) solar PV construction projects, rather than residential/small commercial systems only.
• Three-phase and medium-voltage (MV) electrical experience.
• Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installation or commissioning experience.
• Registration, or eligibility for registration, with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
• Experience with solar monitoring, data-logging or SCADA systems.
• Knowledge of grid interconnection and embedded generation requirements.
• Experience working with multiple inverter and equipment brands.
• Previous experience supervising installation teams or junior electricians.
• Experience engaging directly with clients, EPC contractors and project stakeholders on site.
