UNDERWRITER-AGRICULTURE
Reporting to: Agriculture Specialist
JOB PURPOSE
To support agriculture underwriting by evaluating and managing insurance risks, ensuring profitability, compliance and effective risk mitigation for ZSIC-GI’s clients across crop, livestock and agribusiness portfolios.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Agricultural Risk Assessment and Underwriting
• Evaluates and assesses risks associated with crops, livestock and other agricultural enterprises.
• Develops and implements underwriting guidelines specific to agricultural insurance.
• Ensures all agricultural risks are priced correctly and in line with ZSIC-GI standards.
2. Product Development and Innovation
• Contributes to the design and enhancement of agricultural products tailored to client needs.
• Collaborates with banks, cooperatives and farmer associations to promote tailored solutions.
• Supports product testing and provides feedback on performance and improvements.
3. Policy Administration and Compliance
• Ensures accurate and timely issuance of agricultural insurance policies.
• Reviews and approves proposals, quotations and endorsements within delegated authority.
• Ensures compliance with internal policies, industry standards and regulatory requirements.
4. Business Development Support
• Provides technical input to the sales team on agricultural insurance products.
• Participates in client meetings, presentations and training to raise market awareness.
• Builds and maintains relationships with strategic partners in the agricultural sector.
5. Claims Support
• Liaises with claims teams to provide technical input on agricultural claims..
• Supports accurate claims assessment through risk analysis and loss history.
• Ensures underwriting practices mitigate exposure to fraudulent claims.
6. Decision Making and Problem Solving
• Decides on acceptance, rejection and rating of agricultural risks within delegated authority.
• Provides recommendations to the Manager for high-value or complex risks.
• Exercises judgement in balancing profitability, client needs and risk exposure.
QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS
• Grade 12 Certificate with five O-Levels, including Mathematics and English.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance, Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Agro-Forestry, Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management or related field.
• Professional qualification such as ACII or CII. Valid driver’s licence.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in underwriting, insurance or risk assessment.
• Strong negotiation, stakeholder engagement and relationship management abilities.
• Familiarity with insurance regulatory frameworks in Zambia.
• Computer literacy with proficiency in insurance management systems and MS Office Suite.
KEY TECHNICAL SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
• Strong knowledge of agricultural production systems, risks and insurance mechanisms.
• Proficiency in underwriting principles, risk assessment methodologies and actuarial pricing concepts.
• Excellent analytical, research and report-writing skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Office-based work
Works in an office environment within ZSIC-GI, interacting with departments across Head Office and branches.
Field work
Travel to farms, cooperatives, agro-dealers and project sites across t for risk assessments, loss verification and farmer engagement.
